Shield-Brother and Shield-Sister are phrases of respect used by The Companions. Several companions and certain Stormcloaks use the term. Being a Shield-Brother or Shield-Sister means one fighting without fear or hesitation in the defense of their other Shield-Brothers and Sisters, and are always backing them up. Companions generally suggest that people never go on a dangerous task without having a Shield-Sibling with them.
"Eyes on the prey, not the horizon."―The Companions[src]
The Companions are similar to the Fighters Guild of Cyrodiil. Eorlund, a blacksmith in Whiterun, states that they have been leaderless since Ysgramor. He says that an elder known as Kodlak Whitemane acts as theHarbinger (counselor), but that there have been no actual leaders since Ysgramor. The fact that they have no official leader is emphasized by their name.
If Torvar is asked, "Who's in charge around here?" before joining, he will reply, "In charge of what? I'm in charge of me, and you're in charge of you."
Jorrvaskr, the mead hall where the Companions live and operate, is the oldest building in Whiterun. Jorrvaskr is the home of The Companions, located on the eastern side of Whiterun in the Wind District. Jorrvaskr sits at the base of the Skyforge which is an ancient forge from which special weapons and armor are crafted by Eorlund Gray-Mane. The Skyforge creates the finest steel in Tamriel, which is why Jorrvaskr was erected in this location. The inside serves as both the Companions' lodging and mead hall where they sleep, tell tales of valor, and occasionally fight each other. Once The Companions are joined, this hall can serve as home for the Dragonborn, too.On the southern wall of the mead hall is a special area created to hold the fragments of Wuuthrad. At the end of the Companions questline, the last fragments are collected, and Wuuthrad is reforged to become whole. Wuuthrad can be kept after the final quest.
After joining The Companions, if the law is broken in Whiterun, and the guards react negatively, members of the Companions leap to defend. The way that The Companions' bounty works is different than the normal bounty system. The only way that bounty can be received is by stealing things from other Companions (through pickpocketing or just taking things from the shelves of Jorrvaskr) or by killing a companion in a single hit. It is possible to attack any one of The Companions without incurring any bounty. A warning is issued upon first strike, "Watch it there, Brother/Sister". Thus, the Sneak, One-Handed, and Archery skills, as with any other offensive skill, can be leveled repeatedly. Killing a Companion causes a bounty of 1,000 to be assessed.
The Companions appear to be more tolerant of non-Nords than most, as there is at least one Imperial and one Dunmer among those being considered. Similar to finding Aela, Farkas and Ria fighting a Giant, the Dragonborn may also find Ria and Vilkas fighting two sabre cats, Skjor, Aela and Njada fighting a mammoth or Farkas, Athis and Torvar fighting wolves.
The Companions also have a secret. Several of the Companions are werewolves and, as such, the guild is in constant conflict with a band of werewolf hunters known as the Silver Hand. During an early Companion quest, Proving Honor, an attack on Farkas by the Silver Hand can be witnessed from within a locked cage. After this, "What is it like being a werewolf?" can be asked of them. They will not answer the question and may attack if too many questions are asked.
After completing more quests after the Proving Honor quest for the Companions, Skjor can be spoken to. He and Aela offer lycanthropy. If the Dragonborn agrees, a special ceremony is conducted allowing for the transformation into a werewolf to occur once per day. Further interaction with the Companions halts until a decision is made
to join the Circle, the Dragonborn must willingly contract Lycanthropy from the other members
The hunting group called the Silver Hand are the enemies of the Circle, as their profession lies in hunting down werewolveswith silver-made weapons. They are aware that the Circle is made up of lycanthropes and for that, they hunt and attempt to kill any member of The Circle. The Circle meet at the Underforge (locked out until you have the option to join the circle), which is a small cavelike room underneath the Skyforge. The Underforge has a stone bowl in the center of the room, which The Circle uses to introduce the beastblood to new members. A small tunnel leads out of the Underforge to a farm outside of Whiterun. The Totems of Hircine are also found here after collecting them.

Kodlak Whitemane
Name: Kodlak Whitemane
Age: 40
Sex: Male
Species: Werewolf(Nord)
Family: Aela(daughter) and Tilma(wife)
Orientation: Straight
Relationship Status: Married
Occupation: Warrior
Rank: Harbinger and Circle Member
Preferred Weapon: Steel Warnhammer
Appearance:
Mannerisms and Back-story: As Harbinger of the Companions, Kodlak does not give orders but his word is highly respected. Though he is a member of the Circle, he wishes to be rid of his lycanthropy because he wants his soul to go to Sovngarde--the Nordic afterlife. Kodlak was the leader of the Companions for twenty years, balancing his skill, ferocity in combat, and commanding presence. His condition has reached its final stages of deterioration, and he slowly became frustrated as he got weaker and it showed though he never openly complains--this made him step down as leader. Regardless of his physical health, Kodlak proves to be a benign(gracious) and wise individual for such a rowdy group, able to see others' potential. He uses his position as Harbinger to channel the Companions' skill in a way that can benefit Tamriel's people, rather than leaving them to brawl and drink whiskey all day long. He also does not condone unnecessary bloodshed as it is dishonorable. Though, at times Kodlak can be very withdrawn and sometimes spends a lot of time in his room writing in his journal or pouring over things that bring back memories of his glory days.

Aela the Huntress
Name: Aela "The Huntress" Whitemane
Age: 19 Sex: Female Species: Werewolf(Nord) Family: Kodlak(father), Tilma(Step-mother) Orientation: Lesbian Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Archery Trainer, thief, and warrior Rank: Circle Member Preferred Weapon: Hunting bow Appearance: Aela has a thin body that almost has a fragile look to it, yet she is a strong member of the Companions. She stands at 5'4" with green-hazel eyes and long blonde hair. Mannerisms and Back-story: Aela joined the Companions at the age of sixteen, following in her mother's footsteps. She claims that all of the women in her family since the Companions first started have been a member. Growing up, her father would take her out hunting everything there was to with him in the woods until she was old enough for her Trail. Since her mother didn't live long enough to see her join, she fights to honor her and all of her Shield-Sisters through time. Although she is a thief, she frowns upon all other infractions of the law. And unlike the other members of the Companions, she cannot be cured of her lycanthropy since both of her parents had it. She now secretly wants to be a part of the Blades, having much respect for them and knowing that dragons have returned. |
Farkas Rigmar
Name: Farkas Rigmar
Age: 23 Sex: Male Species: Werewolf(Nord) Family: Skjor(Brother) Orientation: Straight Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Warrior Rank: Circle Member Preferred Weapon: One-handed sword Appearance: Farkas has a tall and muscular build similar to his twin's. He stands at 6'2" with brown hair and blue eyes, usually seen wearing steel armor. Mannerisms and Back-story: Farkas is very close to his twin brother, Vilkas, and is known for being the stronger of the two. However, he is kindhearted and follows along with his brothers' views in most situations. He also tends to be kinder in conversations with people and will be the first--apart from Kodlack--to welcome new members and be friendly towards them. If not in Jorrvaskr, Farkas is hunting or walking in the woods with either Aela, Vilkas, or Ria--whom are his closest friends. Vilkas often jokes about Farkas being the more dim-witted of the two, which is a fairly honest assessment. This is shown when he converses with others, and surprisingly is very blunt at times and tends to not use many words. Similar to his closest friends in the companions, he too wishes to someday be a Blade. |
Vilkas Rigmar
Name: Vilkas Rigmar
Age: 23 Sex: Male Species: Werewolf(Nord) Family: Skjor and Farkas(brothers) Orientation: Straight Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Fencing Trainer and warrior Rank: Circle Member Preferred Weapon: Two-Handed Sword Appearance: Vilkas has a tall and muscular build similar to his twin's. He stands at 6'2" with brown hair and blue eyes, usually seen wearing iron armor Mannerisms and Back-story: Vilkas and his brothers were all raised in the Companions' Hall. Their father had left them there while he went to fight in a war and never returned. Eventually, the twins both officially joined the Companions at the age of twelve and said to be the youngest members to ever join. When Vilkas first meets someone he seems to think that they aren't worthy of being a Companion, yet after they join he will eventually warm up to them if they prove themselves. Unlike his brother, he is well-spoken and considered to be the more intelligent twin--the counter part to his brother's physical prowess. All three of the brothers contain a single attribute; their resistance to their beast-blood and choosing to refrain from shifting. However, he struggles with the side effects more harshly than the others. Vilkas is also though of as a hot-tempered man and claims to have killed every type of creature in Tamriel. He is often seen in the woods hunting or walking with Farkas, Aela, and/or Ria. |
Skjor Rigmar
Name: Skjor "The Scarred" Rigmar
Age: 19 Sex: Male Species: Human(Nord) Family: Vilkas and Farkas(brothers) Orientation: Straight Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Warrior Rank: Member Preferred Weapon: One-handed sword Appearance: Like his brothers, Skjor is tall yet he is thinner than them due to his time as a prisoner of war(POW)--yet still fairly toned. He stands at 5'11" with dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes, taking after his mother's looks. After being shot on the upper right side of his chest(wasn't wearing armor at the time), it was sloppily stitched shut so an ugly scar remains. Also, from being tortured; he has designs of whip lashes covering his back, thick scars around his wrists and ankles from being tied up too tight, stubby nails that are just starting to grow back from being ripped out, burn scars all over his feet from standing on hot coals for hours, and intricate scars on his chest and abdominals from knives being stabbed and dragged into him. Mannerisms and Back-story: Unlike his brothers, Skjor joined the Stormcloak Rebellion and fought in several battles alongside other soldiers and against the Imperial Empire. After suffering a possibly lethal injury of an arrow to the chest, he was taken as a POW by the Imperial Empire. For weeks he was held in the interrogation chambers, often being tortured in attempt to give away location of rebellion campgrounds and Stormcloak plans. He never told the truth and lied about locations throughout his interrogations which ended up annoying guards, causing them to give him random beatings while in his prison cell. They finally decided he was of no use and transported him to Helgan(Falkreath Hold) for execution. Before he was to be executed, the first dragon attack occurred and he was barely able to escape. After, he traveled home to Whiterun and joined the Companions to reunite with his older brothers. Aela sees him as one of the strongest members. Because of his many scars covering his body, he has become self conscious and rarely lets anyone even see him shirtless--his original shy personality not helping him the least bit. |

Vignar Gray-Mane
Name: Vignar "The Revered" Gray-Mane
Age: 58
Sex: Male
Species: Human(Nord)
Family: Eorlund(Son)
Orientation: Straight
Relationship Status: Widower
Occupation:
Rank: Elder
Preferred Weapon: N/A
Appearance:
Mannerisms and Back-story:
Vignar Gray-Mane is a Nord member of the Gray-Mane clan in Whiterun. He is a die-hard supporter of theStormcloaks and respected figure in the city, albeit not by Olfrid Battle-Born. If the Dragonborn sides with the Stormcloaks during the Civil War questline, he will become the Jarl of Whiterun. He is known as "Vignar the Revered" to The Companions.
He seems to be the oldest member of The Companions, Kodlak suggested that he witnessed the rise and fall of about half a dozen Harbingers, and Vilkas saying that he knows Companions' history as well as Vignar, by now, except he can remember it.
Of all the Gray-Manes, Vignar seems to be the one who is most opposed to the Battle-Borns, with both women in the family having lines about the two clan's feud's stupidity, and the other men not commenting.

Njada Stonearm
Name: Njada Stonearm
Age: 17 Sex: Female Species: Human(Nord) Family: Orientation: Straight Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Thief Rank: Apprentice Preferred Weapon: Dagger Appearance: Mannerisms and Back-story: Initially, Njada will comes off as rude through her offensive and insulting comments--tending not to be very helpful. Although she is a master at lock picking she fails to rise in the ranks due to her resistance to be given assistance ever. Even though she may refer to you as a "friend" she may still shows displeasure towards you. Njada was originally from Solitude but fled once the war started, not fitting as a Nord in a now Imperial territory. Though it was a tough move, she was grateful to be freed from her abusive parents. |
Ria
Name: Ria
Age: 16 Sex: Female Species: Human(Imperial) Family: Out of contact with Orientation: Bisexual Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Warrior Rank: Whelp Preferred Weapon: Bow and arrow Appearance: Ria has an athletic appearance, standing at 5'6" with a toned structure.. She has light brown hair and hazel eyes Mannerisms and Back-story: Ria is the newest member of the Companions--known collectively as the "Whelp". Along with Njada, she was born in Solitude and they were childhood friends; however they don't speak much now. Ria is loved by everyone in the Companions(even Njada but she doesn't show it) due to her shy yet friendly appearance and warrior at heart. She is often times seen in the forest with Farkas, Aela, and/or Vilkas. Similarly to the rest of the group, she looks up to the Blades. |
Torvar
Name: Torvar
Age: 21 Sex: Male Species: Human(Nord) Family: Orientation: Straight Relationship Status: Single Occupation: Warrior Rank: Apprentice Preferred Weapon: War hammers and axes Appearance: Torvar, like many other soldiers, stands at 6'0" square with broad shoulders and a very muscular build. He has dusty blond hair and light blue eyes, also letting short stubble grow as presumed as just plain laziness. Due to his time as a prisoner of war(POW), he has various scars along his body; the most eye-catching is the gnarly gash that starts from his left collarbone and runs down to his right abdomen. He also has a noticeable permanently broken nose. Mannerisms and Back-story: Torvar was born and raised in Whiterun. Before Ria, he was the most recent whelp and still isn't taking well to the intensive training. Before joining the Companions he fought alongside Skjor and was held in the same POW interrogation camp as him. However, he deals with his harsh memories differently as he is usually drunk and many of his comments regarding alcohol. At this point, he is obviously more interested in getting drunk than in training or doing work for the Companions. At first glance he seems friendly but as you get to know him he progressively becomes more sour. Torvar resists arrest and fights without questions, an uncommon trait amongst the rest of the Companions. |

Species: Human(Nord)
Family: Vignar(Father)

Occupation: Smith for Companions
Rank: N/A
Preferred Weapon: N/A

Mannerisms and Back-story:
Eorlund Gray-Mane is considered to be the best blacksmith in Skyrim, forging weapons and armor for The Companions at the Skyforge in Whiterun. However, he is not a direct member of the Companions. Eorlund is aNord and can usually be found working at the Skyforge, just north of Jorrvaskr, up the stairs. He is normally seen crafting Skyforge Weapons for The Companions. Eorlund makes weapons such as the Skyforge Dagger which can be found in the Inventory of Aela the Huntress if she is your companion.
As a member of the Gray-Mane family, he strongly supports the Stormcloaks. If the Stormcloaks capture Whiterun, Eorlund's brother, Vignar Gray-Mane, becomes Jarl. His children are Avulstein, Thorald, and Olfina. Eorlund will become frustrated if he feels he is being asked stupid questions. Although he (like the rest of his family) support the Stormcloaks, he may possibly share some of the Companion's views of being neutral, though there is no indication of his true views of the Civil War.
